Check for gas and electricity
A gas smell means leave and call. Stay out of standing water near outlets, the panel or an electric heater’s wiring.
Diamond Bar, CA · Referral service
Water heater leaking right now? Call to be connected with an independent local plumber, and use the steps on this page to limit the damage until they arrive. We are a referral service: the plumber you speak with diagnoses the leak, quotes the job and does the work.
Serving Diamond Bar, Walnut, Rowland Heights, Pomona, Chino Hills and West Covina. Coverage depends on the provider and your address. Smell gas? Leave the building and call 911 or SoCalGas at 1-800-427-2200.
Quick answer
Stay safe first, then stop the water. Close the cold-water valve on the pipe feeding the heater; if you cannot reach it, close the main water shutoff. Switch off an electric heater’s breaker or a gas heater’s control only if it is dry and easy to reach. If you smell gas, leave the building and call 911 or SoCalGas at 1-800-427-2200 from outside. Then call a plumber. The full checklist is on our emergency water heater leak repair guide.

It is on the cold pipe entering the top of the tank. Turn it gently. If it will not move, use the main shutoff instead.
Breaker off for electric, gas control off for gas, only if the control is dry. Otherwise leave it and call.
Towels or a wet-dry vacuum help. Take photos for insurance or your landlord, then call and describe what you see.
Diagnosis
It depends on where the water starts. Water runs downhill, so a puddle at the base of the tank does not prove the tank has failed. Leaks at fittings and valves are usually repairable and a lot cheaper than a new heater. A leak through the tank shell is not repairable, and that is when replacing the leaking water heater is the right move.
| Where you see water | Likely cause | Repair or replace? | Read next |
|---|---|---|---|
| At the pipes on top | Corroded flex connectors, a weeping shutoff valve or a failed fitting | Usually repair | Flex line and valve leaks |
| From the pipe beside the tank | Relief valve discharging due to pressure, expansion or a worn valve | Usually repair | T&P relief valve leaks |
| Pooling under the tank, dry fittings | Corroded tank liner and shell | Replace | Tank corrosion |
| Around a tankless unit | Isolation valves, connections, condensate line or scale damage | Depends | Tankless leaks and scale |
| Gas smell near the heater | Gas connector or control. Not a plumbing job to wait on | Leave first | Gas smell safety |
| Wet floor or ceiling after the leak | Water damage that needs drying | Dry quickly | Water damage and drying |
Manufacturers commonly cite roughly 8 to 12 years for a tank heater, so age is also a factor. A newer heater with a leaking connector is a repair, while an older one with rusty water and a wet base is usually a replacement.

We are not a plumbing company. We answer the call, ask for your address and what you are seeing, and, if an independent plumbing professional covers your area and is available, we connect you or pass your call to them. From that point the provider diagnoses the leak, tells you what it will cost and how long it will take, and does the work if you say yes.
You are under no obligation to accept a quote. Read more on our about page, and the terms and referral disclosure, which explains that providers may compensate us for referred calls.
Check any license on the CSLB license lookup.
Choosing a plumber
The providers we refer callers to are independent businesses. Their licenses, insurance, reviews, awards and years of experience belong to them, not to this website, and we do not publish provider ratings or credentials because none are verified here. Anything a provider tells you about their record is worth confirming before you sign.
| Check | How | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Contractor license | Ask for the number and look it up on the CSLB lookup. Plumbing falls under the C-36 classification. | California generally requires a license for work above $1,000 in labor and materials. |
| Fee and scope in writing | Ask what the diagnostic fee is, what the quote includes and what would change the price. | Avoids surprises once the heater is open. |
| Permit and bracing | Ask whether the quote includes the permit, inspection and earthquake straps for a replacement. | Replacement normally needs a permit, and state law requires bracing. |
| Warranty | Ask separately about the manufacturer’s warranty on the unit and the plumber’s labor warranty. | Parts and labor are covered by different parties. |

Service area
Local conditions change what causes a leak and who issues the permit. Here is what public sources say about Diamond Bar, followed by guides for the neighboring communities we focus on.
| Topic | What public sources say | Why it matters for a leak |
|---|---|---|
| Water supply | Walnut Valley Water District says it serves the full city of Diamond Bar. | Your supplier’s annual water quality report shows hardness and other details for your area. |
| Water hardness | The district’s 2025 report lists average hardness of 234 mg/L for its Weymouth supply (about 60% of its water) and 97 mg/L for its Miramar supply (about 39%). That is roughly 14 and 6 grains per gallon by our conversion. | The USGS classes water above 180 mg/L as very hard. Scale and corrosion shorten tank life and foul valves and connectors. |
| Housing | About 72 percent of the city’s roughly 17,600 homes are single-family detached (2020), and about half were built before 1980, according to the city’s housing element. | Older homes often have older shutoff valves, connectors and closet or garage installations worth checking. |
| Permits | City of Diamond Bar Community Development, Building and Safety Division, 21810 Copley Drive. The city’s main line is (909) 839-7000. | A replacement normally needs a plumbing permit and inspection. Ask your plumber to include it. |
| Earthquakes | The USGS places the epicenter of the 2008 magnitude 5.4 Chino Hills earthquake about 8 km southeast of Diamond Bar, with few damage reports. | State law requires new and replacement water heaters to be braced, anchored or strapped. |
If you are a Diamond Bar resident with a leaking heater, start with the steps above and then call to be connected with a local Diamond Bar plumber who can confirm coverage for your street. Replacement jobs here are handled through the city’s Building and Safety Division, and our water heater replacement guide lists what a compliant installation includes.

We do not publish prices, because they depend on the cause of the leak, the home and the provider. These are the factors that move a quote, so you can compare like with like.
Common questions
If you smell gas, leave and call 911 or SoCalGas at 1-800-427-2200. Otherwise close the cold-water valve on the pipe feeding the heater, or the main water shutoff, switch off the breaker (electric) or gas control (gas) only if it is dry and easy to reach, and call a plumber.
It depends on where the water comes from. Leaks at connectors, shutoff valves, the drain valve and the relief valve can usually be repaired. A leak from the tank shell or base means the tank has failed and the heater has to be replaced.
Water often runs down from a fitting or the relief valve pipe, so check the top first. If every joint is dry and water still collects under the tank, the liner has corroded through. Hard water, sediment and a worn-out anode rod are the usual causes.
No. We are a referral service. We connect callers with independent local plumbing professionals, and the provider you speak with diagnoses the leak, quotes the work and does it.
That is up to the provider and depends on the time of day, your address and how busy they are. Ask for the arrival window, the diagnostic or trip fee and whether it is applied to the repair before you agree to a visit.
Most California cities require a plumbing permit for water heater replacement, and the City of Diamond Bar’s Building and Safety Division is the office that handles building permits. Ask the plumber to confirm the permit and inspection are included in the quote.
Ask for the contractor license number and look it up on the California Contractors State License Board lookup. Plumbing work is done under the C-36 classification, and California generally requires a license for work above $1,000 in labor and materials.
We focus on Diamond Bar, CA and nearby communities, including Walnut, Rowland Heights, Pomona, Chino Hills and West Covina. Coverage depends on the provider who takes your call and your exact address.
